Mike Rhim, Sports Program Director

It’s an honor to serve as Director of the Sports Program and carry out the mission of the Church to develop dynamic disciples. We use sports as a way to reach youth and adults and teach them about the love of Jesus Christ. Our goal is to develop character and integrity in our young people while teaching them the value of participating in all sports. Our coaches and coordinators are mentors as each team and group is expected to attend church, Bible Study or the monthly Youth Ministry. We have some great members in the Sports Program and we are here to serve the Church as well as the community. We are always looking for good members with a willing heart to serve through coaching, mentoring, tutoring, or volunteering their time and energy. We are excited about what God has been doing in the Sports Program and look forward to Him taking the Ministry to greater heights. Please come join us.

To God be the glory.

Our History

In 1993, Deacon William Gentry and Deacon Hank Lloyd launched what has become the First Baptist Church of Glenarden Sports Program. They put together a First Baptist men’s basketball team, coached it and started a basketball league at the Glenarden Community Center. The FBCG team also played in other church basketball leagues. With no initial budget, Deacon Lloyd spent a lot of his personal funds on team registration fees, uniform shirts, etc. A few years later, discussions began about forming AAU teams under the FBCG Sports Program as a way to minister to youth through sports. Daniel Abraham documented a vision for the AAU program that Deacon Lloyd supported. Chris Carter and Paul Wilson then helped implement that vision by coaching and recruiting other members to join the Ministry. Over the years, the program has grown from two AAU basketball teams to 12 AAU and five intramural teams, a thriving soccer program, and more, with over 250 youth in the program. We’ve adopted the motto, In Jesus Name We Play. Our growth has been phenomenal, led by the basketball program as we have teams that have played on a national level, we’ve had kids gain scholarships to colleges based on being in our program, we’ve had players and families give their lives to Christ because of the coaching and mentoring they received under our tutelage. We’ve also conducted an annual basketball tournament to raise funds for the program, where we typically average over 60 teams from around the area, and as far away as Delaware, participate in our three-day event.

OUR WHY

Mission:

The mission of the Sports Program is to develop Christian athletes through regular biblical and sportsmanship training, coaching, mentoring, participating in competitive games, conducting workshops and other ministry events.

Vision:

The vision of the Sports Program is to develop dynamic Christian athletes by using sports to enhance their character while striving for success in their fields of play.

Objectives:

  • Participate in basketball tournaments and leagues, and create success on and off the court to allow kids to gain recognition and possibly win scholarships to college.

  • Recognize kids for demonstrating good character traits and good grades in school, while helping others who need assistance in raising their grades in school by offering mentoring programs.

  • Develop coaches who can lead kids to Christ and coach them to success.
Conduct tournaments and leagues to raise money to offset the costs of the various programs.

  • Create opportunities for adults to participate in sports, such as softball, bowling, or golf.

  • Develop character in youth through discipline, consistency, and leadership.
Conduct camps to teach kids various sports, and the value of having Christ in their lives.

  • Have players who have graduated college, return to assist the program through coaching or other ways, utilizing the church’s mission of developing dynamic disciples through discipleship, discipline, and duplication.

‘As for us, we have all of these great witnesses who encircle us like clouds. So we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life’s marathon race with passion and determination, for the path has been already marked out before us. ‘

— Hebrews 12:1
